Calgary Heritage Authority, Lion Award for Resource Conservation (2012)
Heritage meets modern.
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) Centre is a testament to combining heritage preservation with a new and modern office tower in Calgary’s Beltline district. The Centre features a four-storey heritage building (the Dr. Carl Safran Centre) linked to a ten-storey tower and conference centre for Calgary’s public school board. The CBE Centre also includes retail at grade level and three levels of below-grade parking.
Smith + Andersen provided mechanical engineering services for the centre.

A mechanical make-up.
While the Dr. Carl Safran Centre prioritizes heritage preservation, the office tower and conference centre is a modern building that required current and timely mechanical solutions. Each floor of the tower is served by chilled water compartment units located in the core, with hot water radiant panels around the perimeter. In the penthouse, a central variable speed make-up air unit provides outdoor air to the compartment units on each floor. Outdoor air is pre-heated during shoulder seasons using chilled water return from the compartment unit. A tenant condenser water system is provided for 24/7 cooling loads.
Completed in 2011, this project achieved LEED Gold certification. A year later, the Calgary Heritage Authority awarded the Dr. Carl Safran Centre a Lion Award for Resource Conservation.
