Nestled against the historic “flatiron” Gooderham building in the Old Toronto district, Berczy Park is a pristine and whimsical place to spend a summer afternoon. Large elm trees shade the grassy lawns and patterned granite paving that surround a two-tiered cast iron fountain. While at first glance, the fountain appears to be a classic 19th-century design, a closer inspection reveals that the water spouts are intricately crafted dog sculptures. This delightful surprise amid the traditional landscape is the signature of Montreal-based designer Claude Cormier. The public space promises to be a treasured respite from city life for many years to come.
