Engineering excellence in Canada's capital.
If you asked us what our Ottawa office is known for, we would probably point out our decades of experience contributing to landmarks around the city, collaborative communication style on projects, and deep roots in the community delivery methods. But then, we would jump right to the people we have working in the office (including donut Tuesdays).
Established in 1976, Ottawa was Smith + Andersen’s second-ever office location. Over and above the decades of experience providing mechanical engineering and electrical engineering services in Canada's capital city, as well as throughout Ontario and Quebec, the office is simultaneously also young and thriving. This is a group that truly works as a team, evidenced as much by their pumpkin carving capabilities as by their project experience. They succeed together, taking that same approach when contributing to IPD projects, or net zero design solutions, or community-centric healthcare facilities. The principals of this office are driven, fun, award-winning technical leaders who have a vision for their growing team and their city.

“IPD projects have been a refreshing delivery model to be a part of. They emphasize the importance of effective design implementation, collaborative solutions, and strong relationship building.”
COLLABORATIVE DELIVERY METHODS
Smith + Andersen is proud to have been a part of Royal Canadian Dragoons — the first defense construction project in Canada to use the new Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, where collaboration is built right into the contract structure.
OUR COLLABORATION IS NOT LIMITED TO PROJECTS
When our local team isn't delivering engineering excellence, they’re skating on the Rideau Canal, playing street hockey in the parking lot, or practicing their curling skills for the next bonspiel (a sporty bunch, eh?).

COMMUNITY-BASED CARE FACILITIES
There is an increased demand for community-based care facilities, and The Aline-Chrétien Health Hub is a response to that demand. A pilot project for the province, this facility merges health and community needs, with direct and easy access to a multitude of services.
GLOBAL CENTRE FOR HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY
Inside: Mechanical systems, supporting fresh air and improving air circulation throughout the variety of programmed spaces.
Outside: Integrated electrical infrastructure in the courtyard, allowing for maximum programming flexibility for outdoor lectures, film screenings, and concerts.
CANADA’S LARGEST HERITAGE BUILDING MOVE
The original Horticulture Building was moved 140-metres across the Lansdowne Park redevelopment site to its new location. Smith + Andersen has worked on a number of projects at Lansdowne Park, but this one in particular involved a complete retrofit to a multi-functional occupancy, while supporting the original heritage building.
THE MORE (TENANT FIT-UPS), THE MERRIER
Our team provided mechanical and electrical services for Shopify Performance Court, helping to design make-up air units, ecologizer exhaust, heat exchangers, and occupancy controlled LED lighting in the open ceilings. On every office fit-up project, our Ottawa team uses a forward-thinking approach to create innovative solutions for their clients.
