A place for friendship.
A welcome addition to the south end of Halifax, the Diamond Bailey House is a Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre housing development. The three-storey shelter will provide emergency and affordable housing options to help transition people from housing insecurity to longer-term housing, focusing on the urgent housing needs of the urban Indigenous population in Halifax.
The architectural design features a curved envelope, prioritizing natural daylight through a wide array of windows and incorporating natural wood elements throughout. This development includes plans for 32 emergency beds on the main floor, 11 bedrooms with shared washroom facilities on the second floor, and 10 bachelor units on the third floor. Designed by Fathom Studio, Smith + Andersen was engaged as the mechanical and electrical engineer, and Footprint was engaged for sustainable design consultation.
Sustainability was a core consideration for the 12,000 square foot development. The design decisions made collaboratively with the client and consultant teams contributed to an energy model showing 25 per cent energy savings as compared to NECB-17. In addition to energy efficient design, our mechanical team accounted for unique considerations that would help facilitate traditional activities, such as smudging ceremonies, that Diamond Bailey House will welcome when the doors open in 2022.
