The greenest ambulatory care facility in Ontario.
With the goal of becoming the greenest ambulatory care facility in the province at the time of opening, Peel Memorial Centre’s project team approached each task with this clear focus. Replacing the old Peel Memorial Hospital, which closed in 2007, Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness includes a medical outpatient clinic and an urgent care centre, as well as dedicated suites for day surgery, a dialysis unit, and diagnostic imaging. It is a 591,000 square foot space that also consists of education and research departments dedicated to outpatient mental health, chronic disease prevention, seniors’ wellness, and comprehensive care for women, children, and teens. The centre serves the greater Brampton area in a space that maximizes on energy efficient alternatives.
This LEED gold certified project features geothermal energy storage, dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS), heat recovery and geothermal chillers, as well as optimized heating and cooling plants. The project team selected features like a high-efficiency fan that achieves 73 per cent peak efficiency (at the normal operating point) as opposed to the typical efficiency of a fan (60-65 per cent). Geothermal chillers are used to store heat ground through the geothermal loops to be used at an appropriate time, as determined by the building automation system. Additionally, the centre’s heating plants consist of condensing hydronic boilers and heat from the geothermal heat pump chillers to feed low-water temperature heating loops. The result of a combination of efforts is Peel Memorial Centre’s building systems (including heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing, and lighting) designed to perform 26% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and a number of innovative solutions that contribute to achieving these energy targets.
