Local talent backed by national strength.
With highly-skilled mechanical and electrical engineers, our Edmonton team has dedicated resources with proven project experience. Building evaluations, power systems and arc flash studies, sustainable building consultation – these are just a few of the many reasons that local and national clients turn to S+A in Edmonton. True team players, our excellence in base building work often leads to tenant improvement projects (and vice versa).
After more than a decade of local operations, we know that in Edmonton versatility is key. We often contribute to projects across the country, taking lessons learned and applying them to local work. As a result, our local portfolio includes true landmarks, such as the intelligent integrated systems design for Edmonton's first Wired Certified office building and contributions to Canada's largest mixed-use and entertainment district. From hi-rise residential towers, to quick tenant work, our local team of twenty takes it all on.
“High-rise towers, boiler replacements, new schools, an iconic cultural hub…we really do see a bit of everything.”

THE COLD NEVER BOTHERED US ANYWAY
The team regularly enjoys some standard indoor social events, typically involving food, bowling, more food. But, in true Edmonton style, every once in a while we also partake in a good ol' World Cup qualifier (even in -14oC weather)!

HEAVY (TIMBER) LIFTING
We design to complement the building method and materials, like the exposed heavy timber structure of the Red Deer College Student Residence. Our mechanical design team used a vertical systems approach, with piping and servicing coordinated via shafts or pipe chases to avoid obstructing the wood with horizontal systems.

WIRED EDMONTON
Edmonton’s local mechanical, electrical, and sustainability expertise combined with Smith + Andersen’s national intelligent integration experience to deliver HSBC Place's integrated building solution – the city’s first Wired Certified Platinum Office.
DESIGNED FOR CHANGE
Everything about the Southgate Centre Sears Redevelopment is set up for the fast-moving retail tenant world. Commercial retail unit shells sit alongside flexible layouts, accommodating brands customers love AND exciting new pop-up shops!
To support this vision, we designed modular systems that can be relocated as leasing agreements evolve.

NORTH AMERICA’S FIRST NET ZERO FIRE STATION
Smith + Andersen provided the mechanical design for Windermere Fire Station 31 in Edmonton, AB, which is slated to be the first net zero fire station in North America. To help the client meet this target, the mechanical system incorporates geothermal features to achieve low energy usage.
DRIVING BRANDS FORWARD
Like the merchandise they hold, automobile dealerships and showrooms represent an important yet significant investment to showcase brand identity.

ICE WORK
Our local mechanical team contributed to multiple phases of the ICE District, including the Edmonton Tower. The tower is unique mechanically, incorporating many energy-saving features and, ultimately, successfully achieving LEED Gold certification.
A+ GRADE FOR THE IPD APPROACH
We truly believe that teamwork is the key to success, which is why we excel at Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). Our Edmonton team has contributed to the success of several IPD projects, including Mill Creek School, regarded as a first-rate, 21-st century learning centre.
“[IPD] allowed the Mill Creek School team to realize material and installation cost savings at critical points in the construction process. We leveraged our own mechanical experience with this type of redesign to flag opportunities to save money.”
