As little energy as possible.
In order to meet the rigorous Passive House design standards, the mechanical and electrical systems were designed so as to support operations that required as little energy as possible. This minimalist design approach helped minimize the energy used for heating and cooling, improve comfort and air quality, and reduce utility cots.
The mechanical design featured an ultra-efficient centralized heat recovery ventilation system. CO2 heat pumps were installed as the primary source of hot water (with electrical back-up).
Due to the fluctuating temperatures experienced in Smithers throughout the year, the design can easily adjust to operate in the warmth or in the extreme cold (as needed).
