Humber College Cultural Hub received Silver at the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) Awards of Excellence in the Construction Award category. This award recognizes colleges or polytechnics for outstanding contributions to the development and execution of modern construction processes that promote efficient and sustainable ambitions within the market sector.
“It’s wonderful to receive that recognition from colleagues and other institutions from around the world saying, “You know what? Yes, Humber, that is exciting. That is innovative. That is best practice. Well done.” It gives you a feeling that we’re on the right track when we deliver these projects.”
As the creative focal point of Humber College’s Lakeshore campus, this project will set a precedent for sustainable building practices in the educational sector. In line with WFCP’s vision for the sector, the Cultural Hub is designed and constructed targeting LEED® Platinum, CAGBC Zero Carbon Building Standard, and the Toronto Green Standard.
Phase one of the project is expected to be complete by the end of Spring 2024 and phase two in 2026.
About the project.
Using integrated project delivery and heavy timber construction, the Hub includes the addition of two music and performing arts venues designed to host a variety of arts and entertainment programs. We designed solutions to incorporate a geothermal system and rooftop solar panels, both of which will contribute to the facility’s sustainable targets. From the Centre’s heavy timber construction to the geothermal system that powers the facility, this project demonstrates excellence in both sustainable execution and future operations.
