A modern community hub.

Located in Miramichi, New Brunswick, the multiplex brings together recreation, wellness, and community under one roof. The facility includes an arena, walking track, gymnasium, pool, and shared spaces, creating a year-round destination for residents of all ages. Once complete, it will serve as both an everyday amenity and a gathering place for larger local events.

The technicalities.

Behind the scenes, the project is defined by a series of complex design decisions. Without access to natural gas, the building relies entirely on electric systems for heating, placing significant demand on the electrical infrastructure and requiring close coordination between disciplines from the outset.

To meet these demands, high-efficiency electric heating boilers and rooftop units have been carefully selected and integrated with a large-capacity electrical service. At the same time, architectural features such as extensive glazing and skylights, particularly around the pool, required thoughtful coordination to balance daylight, comfort, and system performance. 

The aquatic facilities introduce another layer of innovation. Regenerative media filtration replaces traditional backwashing methods, improving pool water quality while reducing water consumption and operational demands. Together, these strategies support a facility that is both technically robust and practical to operate day to day.

Built for performance.

Efficiency is central to the design. The building is projected to perform 25% better than the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) Ontario Building Code baseline, reflecting a strong focus on reducing energy use while maintaining comfort for occupants.

Through careful system design and integration, the Miramichi Multiplex demonstrates how all-electric facilities can succeed at scale, setting a new standard for community buildings in similar climates.
