Don Smith Commercial Building Award, Institutional Community Use category (2023)
Local love.
In 2019, the City of London welcomed a new 42,000 square foot community centre in East Lion’s Park. More than a recreation facility, this new centre will become a community hub, offering a wide range of programs and services to the local neighbourhood. The building will feature a gymnasium, an indoor pool, a community kitchen, a multi-purpose activity room and an artisan space.
Smith + Andersen provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the design of the recreation facility. Our teams also provided communications, security, and audio-visual design. Footprint, a member of the Smith + Andersen Group of Companies, was also engaged to provide sustainability services.

PV, AV, and de-humidification.
Our electrical team designed a photovoltaic system that will provide a renewable energy source. An enhanced lighting control system will have the ability to track energy usage and feature daylight and occupancy controls to reduce energy consumption.
Our audio-visual team provided the sound, projection, and digital signage system designs that allow for AV presentations, as well as collaboration and communication in the pool, gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms.
Our mechanical team designed air-to-air heat recovery in the change rooms, as well as a pool dehumidification unit, and variable frequency drives to enhance energy efficiency. Plumbing fixtures are all low-flow for potable water conservation and showers include mechanical spring timers to shut off the water supply when not in use to reduce overall water consumption.
