Smith + Andersen Principals Kurt Monteiro and Kevin Sharples accepted the 2020 ASHRAE Technology Award (First Place – Health Care Facilities Category) for the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

The Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness is a 591,000 square foot, LEED Gold certified ambulatory care facility serving the city of Brampton in the Greater Toronto Area. Replacing the old Peel Memorial Hospital, which closed in 2007, this development includes a medical outpatient clinic and an urgent care centre, as well as dedicated suites for day surgery, a dialysis unit, and diagnostic imaging. The Centre also includes education and research departments dedicated to outpatient mental health, chronic disease prevention, seniors’ wellness, and comprehensive care for women, children, and teens. Due to the Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM) project delivery method, full involvement of the facility operators was required from design through until commissioning.

Key design features include:

  • Geothermal energy storage
  • Dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS)
  • Heat recovery / geothermal chillers
  • Variable speed magnetic bearing chillers
  • Optimized heating / cooling plant, highly-effective enthalpy recovery
  • Low static pressure air handling systems

As a result, the Peel Memorial Centre systems prioritize flexibility and maintainability, marking the Centre as the greenest ambulatory facility in the province—operating 18 per cent more efficiently than predicted by the Footprint energy model.

This William Osler Health System healthcare facility opened to the public in February 2017, and was designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and RTKL, and constructed by PCL Construction.
