The first Net Zero Fire Station in North America.

Windermere Fire Station 31 services the local community in southwest Edmonton. It is both a functional emergency response facility and a community hub.

Sustainability was a significant focus in the design. Not only because the City of Edmonton required the fire station to obtain LEED Silver certification and meet the city’s own 40 per cent better energy efficiency and 40 per cent better greenhouse gas emissions (compared to NECB 2011) standard. The client also targeted net zero, making it the first net zero fire station in North America. The design combines aspects of historic city fire halls with a modern twist and blends with the natural environment that surrounds it. 

Smith + Andersen was engaged to provide mechanical engineering for this unique fire station and community hub. The mechanical systems reflect the focus on net zero, with an energy-efficient design that incorporates geothermal heating and cooling features in order to achieve low energy usage for the net zero target. The facility includes post-disaster, non-combustible, and sprinklered spaces.
