Alberta Construction Magazine Top Projects Institutional, Design (2015)
Award-winning energy efficiency.
The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning was constructed on the old Nickle Arts Museum site at the University of Calgary’s main campus.
Smith + Andersen designed an ultra-low energy mechanical system for the project. This involved a dedicated outdoor air ventilation system in conjunction with slab heating/cooling, chilled beams and under floor displacement air distribution.
The predominately wood building was modelled to be 72 per cent more efficient than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings baseline, and its design achieved the maximum 19 energy points on the LEED NC 2009 Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 (EA Credit 1). In addition, the design is net zero ready. The final Energy Use Intensity (EUI) for the building was reported as 51.8 kBTU/ft2, and it achieved LEED Gold in 2017.
Smith + Andersen has a long relationship with the University of Calgary, having provided services on a number of projects in addition to the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning in 2015.
