A mountain haven.

The Kees and Claire Hut provides a four-season overnight shelter for backcountry hikers and skiers near Russet Lake on the Spearhead Traverse. The first of three huts located along the traverse, the Kees and Claire hut will accommodate up to 38 travellers and four custodians. The hut will include beds, storage areas for travel equipment, dining areas, and kitchens with propane cooktops. The highly-sustainable facility was financed through public fundraising, with volunteers providing the majority of the labour.

Smith + Andersen was engaged as mechanical and electrical consultants for the first hut.

The project will include composting toilets, propane heaters, and a greywater dispersion system that will divert waste water to a dedicated septic field. Solar panels with a back-up propane generator will provide electricity to the facility.
