Each year, the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) recognizes the province’s best engineering design and innovation. At the 27th annual Showcase Awards Gala, held on April 26th in Edmonton, S+A’s work on the University of Calgary’s Mathison Hall Expansion project received the Award of Excellence in the Building Engineering – Institutional category.
The four-storey Mathison Hall was part of a $90 million project at the University of Calgary’s main campus to transform the delivery of business education for students at the Haskayne School of Business. The project scope included the renovation of an existing building, Scurfield Hall.
The design team faced two major challenges. The first was to design a building that met the University’s aggressive conservation targets, which included LEED® Platinum and Zero Carbon principles, as well as improving the energy efficiency of an existing building. The second was to integrate high-efficiency mechanical solutions with the building’s bold and innovative architectural design.
To successfully overcome these challenges, the design team combined a number of technologies, such as an active façade system, heat recovery with demand control ventilation, and highly efficient equipment upgrades. The end result was not just a building completed on time and on budget; Mathison Hall has an estimated 54 per cent energy cost savings (the maximum available energy LEED® points) against ASHRAE 90.1-2010. It also attained a Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI) of 27.2 kWh/m2/year, which is more efficient than the required minimum, and 47 per cent lower than the 51.1 kWh/m2 achieved by the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2017 reference building. Overall, the design team achieved a net-zero energy increase across both Mathison Hall and Scurfield Hall even after adding approximately 10,000 square metres to the complex.
