Illuminating Engineering Society, Lighting ReDesign Award (2018)

An award-winning parkade.

Metropolis at Metrotown, the third largest mall in Canada, upgraded the lighting systems in nearly 1.5 million square feet of parkade space. 2,699 luminaires across two levels of underground parking, and five levels above ground were replaced with highly-efficient LED lights, saving a monthly average of 44% (3.2 GWh/yr).

The use of existing luminaire locations and controls wiring allowed the busy parkade to remain open during renovations. To keep the parkade lighting at an optimal level, the old 150W HPS fixtures were replaced one-to-one with new 85W LEDs. The lights are programmed to operate at a maximum 55W, but allow for extra light output during parkade maintenance, and decrease to 16W during times of no-occupancy. The above ground luminaires are enabled for daylight harvesting.

Public safety was a key element in the design. Each vandal-resistant luminaire includes occupancy sensors, on-board fault diagnostics, and a wireless transceiver. Each fixture communicates with 8 to 12 neighbouring luminaires to create a high-density wireless mesh. The lights are equipped with a 4.1% up-light component and a BUG rating of B3-U3-G1, illuminating the ceiling to reduce glare, and creating an atmosphere that feels pleasant and safe.
