Bringing the heat.

The District Energy Centre utility plant, located in downtown Calgary, is designed to house over 60 MW of boiler and co-generation plant. It has the necessary auxiliary plant to pump over 100 MW of heating water through approximately 20 kilometers of buried piping to heat buildings located in the Calgary core.

Smith + Andersen provided mechanical engineering services for the initial phase of the project, including the installation of two high efficiency 15 MW (1,500 bhp), and one high efficiency 5 MW (500 bhp) flexible tube, forced draft boilers and two boiler flue condensing economizers for energy reclaim.

The building achieved LEED Silver certification, and utilizes variable speed pumping, advanced controls and various other energy saving techniques.
