Long-term sustainability.

This project was the first building constructed on the Western Memorial Regional Hospital campus. The completed building is located adjacent to Corner Brook Acute Care Hospital.

Corner Brook Long Term Care provides 120 long-term, 15 palliative, and ten rehabilitative care beds. The project was delivered through a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain model. As part of the DBFM team, Smith + Andersen provided mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as intelligent integrated systems design. Footprint provided sustainability consulting for the project.

Energy-saving design.

Throughout the design process, high-efficiency, low-energy solutions were prioritized. A geothermal system (with electrical back-up) is utilized as the primary heating and cooling source. This contributed to significant energy reduction and operating cost savings over the entire lifespan of the facility. The mechanical scope included design for plumbing, HVAC, medical gas, and fire protection, while the electrical scope included LED lighting throughout the facility, back-up power, and a lighting control system.

The mechanical and electrical design considerations contributed to an estimated 46 per cent energy cost savings. The project successfully achieved LEED Silver.
