Committed to education.
Part of the Alberta Government’s larger commitment to build 15 schools catering to the growing population across the province, Joseph M. Demko is a K-9 school located in St. Albert. The two-storey building includes not only traditional classrooms, but also two gymnasiums (one multi-purpose), a technology classroom, and several modular classrooms for maximum flexibility.
Smith + Andersen’s Edmonton team was engaged to provide mechanical engineering to this important project.

Sustainable education.
The design focused on maximizing the available space in the school while also prioritizing student comfort. Displacement ventilation and perimeter radiation were key, providing thermal comfort and effective ventilation for a learning environment. The mechanical design also included variable air volume (VAV) boxes, allowing the school to use only the required ventilation for each specific room (as occupancy fluctuates to various spaces throughout the day).
The design targeted 11 Energy and Atmosphere credits and was able to achieve 34% greater energy efficiency below the ASHRAE 90.1 model.
