Unique, energy-saving mechanical design.
Block D, more commonly known as the Edmonton Tower, is located in the ICE District, a mixed-use sports and entertainment area in downtown Edmonton. With a total area around 4,750,000 square feet, the ICE District is the largest of its kind in Canada.
Smith + Andersen was engaged as the mechanical consultant for the 27-storey office building, which includes a three-storey podium, conference spaces, an outdoor terrace, and a daycare with a rooftop playground.

Lean and green.
Sustainability was a key feature for the entire ICE District, and this tower is unique mechanically, incorporating many energy-saving features. It achieved LEED Gold certification in 2016.
At the forefront of technology, the building utilizes chilled beams for the interior, and variable flow, non-condensing fan coil units with electronically-commutated motors on the perimeter. This system evolved from a need to reduce the size of the core and manage building height, which our team successfully coordinated. Chilled beams also offer ideal comfort conditions to the interior zones by maintaining constant ventilation rates. In addition, the variable flow and dedicated outside air delivery elements of the mechanical design gained energy points toward the tower’s LEED certification.
Other energy-saving features in the building include energy recovery, CO2 sensors, stormwater retention, condensing boilers, high-efficiency chillers, and metering.
Smith + Andersen was involved in several other ICE District developments, including the ICE District parkade (a 2,100-car underground parking garage connected to all towers), Block A (a 56-storey hotel and condominium), Block E (peer review of the 60-storey office and residential tower), and the design development of Block BG (a 43-storey, mixed-use residential tower).
