Holistic systems for complete integration.

Smith + Andersen provided a range of services for the new corporate headquarters for Canon Canada in Brampton. The brief for the five-storey building? It needed to reflect the client’s products – simple, integrated, functional, innovative – and look great. This meant our designs consider the “whole”: systems had to work together, and integrate with the design team’s building systems and Canon’s own business requirements. For example, the room scheduling displays integrate with Canon’s calendar software while also tying to the integrated building management system (BMS) to exchange information with related subsystems like lighting and air-conditioning.

One of the big focuses for the client was security. We designed an integrated Internet Protocol (IP) video surveillance system as well as electronic card access control, video intercom, and intrusion detection systems throughout the facility. In addition, the access control system is designed to control elevator access and turnstiles, and advanced long-range readers are installed to control access to the underground parking and the main outdoor parking gate.

The video surveillance, access control, and video intercom systems are integrated with various building systems such as BMS for efficient start-up and control of air-conditioning and lighting systems.

Audio-visual (AV) technology design was also important for the client. Not only did they want to optimize comfort and connectivity for staff, they also wanted to “wow” customers in their retail showroom. Our AV team obliged, designing interactive, architecturally integrated video walls, projection and distributed audio systems for the space. Laser motion sensors detect when customers pick up items and display relevant graphics and specifications. The office also includes a 120-seat divisible conference space that required flexible presentation, voice lift and control systems, an executive boardroom with integrated audio and video conferencing, and a variety of AV systems for meeting rooms, training rooms, and public spaces.
