Time for an upgrade.

Designed by CS&P Architects, the renovation and expansion of Victoria Road Recreation Centre included new entry additions, pool and change room upgrades and multi-purpose rooms. The west side scope included the demolition of 5,500 square feet of space, various interior demolitions, and a new 10,000 square foot addition on the southwest side. The remaining 62,000 square feet of the centre was renovated. A spectator viewing area on the second level overlooks the arena.

Smith + Andersen was engaged to provide mechanical and electrical engineering for the project. Communications design and audio-visual design was also included in the scope, and Footprint provided sustainability consulting services.

Much-needed improvements.

The renovation included a complicated replacement of the existing change room air handlers and the installation of a new pool dehumidifier. Revised programming of the meeting rooms required modifications to the existing duct distribution. The addition consists of multi-purpose rooms served by a new rooftop air handler and distributed fan-powered boxes. Upgrades to the existing BAS system were combined with the controls of the new addition, tying into the city’s central automation system.

LED lighting was installed across the entire complex, including the parking areas, and the lighting controls consist of a digital centralized time clock for common areas and the parking. In both the arena and the pool area, LED lighting have zoned dimming lighting controls, manually controlled from different areas of the complex for energy efficiencies. All multi-purpose rooms are now equipped with wireless controls to allow complete automation for dimming, occupancy sensor and daylight harvesting. A new, addressable, single-stage fire alarm system was also installed.

Community centres are a place for communication.

The communications requirements involved the design of a structured cabling system to support the building’s voice, data, and wireless network. There was also a requirement to design a new telecommunications room to support the additional space, which also involved the relocation of the existing telecommunications cabinet. The existing telecommunications space was re-designed to permit the use of a full-size telecommunications cabinet. Support and consulting services were provided to the end user to ensure their comfort level with the new network extension.
