Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence Honourable Mention (2012)

The more NHL-sized ice rinks, the better. 

Created as a central hub for local communities to gather, Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre features not one, not two, not three… but FOUR NHL-sized ice rinks with associated change room facilities. It's not all about cooling systems though, as the design also includes mezzanine-level viewing areas and a restaurant that required heating to keep spectators comfortable.

The project was completed in 2011 and has since received LEED Silver certification and the Recreation Industry’s Award of Excellence Honourable Mention. 

 

Different spaces, different requirements. 

Smith + Andersen provided mechanical engineering services for the project, designing energy-efficient systems to suit the different environments within the building. The arenas feature desiccant dehumidification, while in-floor radiant heating was implemented in the arena spectator area. The change rooms utilize air-to-air heat recovery and a refrigeration plant waste heat reclaim was installed for domestic hot water. The design also includes a heating coil unit on the rooftop.

An award-winning formula.

Our electrical and lighting teams worked together to create a design that reduces the overall electrical consumption, placing occupancy sensors throughout the facility and energy-efficient fixtures wherever possible. 

The building’s fire alarm system is an addressable arrangement that is networked to the recreation centre, where our communications team provided a wiring style for the detection system. It utilizes DCL-C wiring, with isolation modules as well as optical beam detectors to provide coverage across large open spans. The result is an award-winning building that prioritized the client’s goals for a well-networked, integrated design.
