A fresh take on workspaces.

Shopify headquarters occupies 11 floors within the Performance Court office tower in downtown Ottawa. Smith + Andersen provided mechanical and electrical services for the fit-up of all floors. The project involved a number of different layouts, from more traditional “desk” office space, through to meeting and assembly rooms, and kitchenettes. The 15th floor also includes a lounge, coat room, and IT room.

The client wanted an inspirational and creative space, and the mechanical and electrical design complements this. The electrical systems were designed using innovative, creative and inventive theming. Additionally, some aspects of the mechanical system are deliberately visible to add to the unusual interior.

More than an office.

The mechanical design for the fit-up on floors five through 11 includes stealth quality fan-powered boxes with hot water heating for the perimeter and variable air volume boxes for the interior. Supply air is provided from compartmental units on each floor.

As part of the fit-up, a full commercial kitchen was installed on the eighth floor to provide staff meals. The base building did not have provisions for a kitchen exhaust system, so make-up air units (MUA), ecologizer exhaust, and heat exchangers were installed at high level in the open ceiling. A section of the base building curtain wall was removed so that MUA units and exhaust could be provided through new louvers at the west end of building.

Occupancy-controlled LED lighting was installed on every floor, and a digital metering system is integrated into the base building system to monitor power consumption.
