A wooden roof truss above an ice rink... not something you see everyday!

The Oakville Arena Revitalization gave a new lease of life to the existing community centre. It involved the renovation of current facilities, as well as an addition with a new seniors’ centre, gymnasium, indoor running track, administration offices, and meeting rooms. The scope also included flexible outdoor facilities, such as a double tennis court with the ability to convert into an artificial rink, to meet the demands of the growing community. A first for community centres in Canada, the project was delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach, with collaborative efforts from all parties involved throughout the process.

Smith + Andersen was engaged as the mechanical, electrical, communications, security, and audio-visual (AV) consultants for the renovation of the arena, which included an indoor NHL-sized ice rink with a wooden roof truss structure, retained as a nod to the arena’s past. Our scope also included sustainability services.

Our mechanical team designed HVAC and fire protection systems which involved special considerations for the heritage wooden roof truss inside the arena.

An integrated approach

The mechanical design for the arena included HVAC and fire protection systems that involved special considerations to accommodate the heritage wooden roof truss. We were also responsible for the refrigeration and lighting system design, which maintain comfortable temperatures and adequate lighting (for both viewers and skaters) in this area of the building.

The audio-visual system extends into all major spaces of the community centre and arena. It includes a facility-wide paging system for mass communication and background music playback for visitors. Sustainable design was also an important consideration for this project. The project achieved LEED Silver with a focus on integrating energy-efficient systems throughout the redevelopment.
