All-purpose design.

The Kananaskis Emergency Services Centre supports all emergency responses within the region through a partnership with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Environment and Parks. This project involved replacing the aging existing facilities located within the same site with a new two-storey building. The layout includes an administration facility, fitness area, crew quarters, locker rooms, meeting space, SCBA filling station, apparatus / storage bays, and training areas. It also has some unique features, such as cold storage for Alberta Parks, a decontamination area, an outdoor training facility, and a training hose tower.

Smith + Andersen provided mechanical engineering services for the project.

Mechanical design fit for the mountains.

Heating and cooling for the office side is provided through perimeter radiant panels and a variable air volume air handling unit with economizer. The apparatus bay is provided with heat only, through in-floor radiant heating and overhead condensing gas-fired unit heaters. A cascading heating water strategy is used in the facility to maximize the efficiency of the two condensing boilers. Additional energy saving measures such as condensing domestic water heaters and outdoor air / exhaust heat recovery are included.

FireSmart strategies are integrated into the building design, including a wildfire sprinkler system to protect the exterior of the building.
