Office tower efficiency.

Located in downtown Calgary, Centennial Place consists of two towers and a retail podium plus parkade. Phase 1 is a 40-storey tower, full retail podium, and 4.5 levels of below grade parking. The Phase 2 tower, with a total of 23 tenant floors, is situated above the west portion of the Phase 1 parking. The project achieved LEED Gold, setting the new minimum standard for green building design.

Smith + Andersen provided mechanical engineering for the project, which was designed by WZMH Architects.

Mechanically, each tower is served by independent central plants located in the penthouse levels.  A chilled water re-claim loop has been provided on ventilation air systems to reduce energy usage by pre-heating outside air when heating, and increasing chiller efficiencies when cooling is required. The boiler plant features condensing boilers for improved overall plant efficiency.  Variable speed pumps and variable speed cooling towers are also included to provide energy savings. Air handler heating coils and perimeter heating were designed for low-grade heating water temperatures to maximize the condensing boiler efficiency.
