Show-stopping showroom.

Allsteel’s showroom space is housed in the distinctive brick Boiler House of the former Toronto Carpet Factory, which operated from 1899 until the 1920s. Smith + Andersen was engaged to provide mechanical, electrical, communications, and lighting design for the space, helping to create an office that also serves as a gallery for Allsteel's work.

All about the layout.

The building was fitted with brand new mechanical and electrical systems, designed to accommodate the updated office layout. Due to the exposed ductwork and piping throughout the space, special consideration was given to the design, layout, installation, and appearance of the mechanical systems.

Other mechanical design features included coordinating the HVAC and plumbing design with the existing air flow and radiant systems to maximize efficiency and comfort. Low flow and motion activated plumbing features are used throughout to reduce water consumption.

 

A light touch.

The interesting architecture of this building was utilized to provide a highly efficient lighting design that is both aesthetically impressive and practical for the building function. A variety of light sources are used, from T5 fluorescent to halogen to LEDs. Daylight harvesting is incorporated to take advantage of the abundant day light in the facility, along with dimming and occupancy sensors to ensure maximum lighting efficiency and aesthetic.

This project achieved LEED Gold Certification.
