The epitome of security.

The Systems Operations Centre (SOC) for Air Canada is a two-storey facility that operates 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. This facility was designed as a Tier II facility (as defined by the Uptime Institute).

The ability to maintain and control the precise physical operating environment of the data centre was essential to the success of this project. As the mechanical, electrical, communications, and security consultant on this unique project, Smith + Andersen employees ASHRAE’s standards for mission critical environments, ensuring factors such as temperature, dew point range, and relative humidity were precisely controlled to meet the needs of this space.

Underfoot...without being underfoot.

The SOC features an underfloor air distribution system, which provides enhanced ventilation effectiveness and occupant comfort. This distribution system allows each occupant to control the air supply in their own zone. High-efficiency condensing boilers were also provided in order to reduce natural gas costs for heating requirements of the facility.

Supporting the support.

The entire building is supported by an emergency power generation system, which consists of three 800kW diesel generators. The electrical distribution to the multiple HVAC systems within the building has been designed where concurrent maintenance to the electrical system can be undertaken without affecting the building operations.

More control.

The building is equipped with the intelligent lighting controls that include everything from dimming controls in specific zones, to a lightning protection system.

The telecommunications horizontal cabling infrastructure consists of high-bandwidth copper UTP cabling throughout the facility, supporting voice, data, CCTV, special data systems and various proprietary two-way communications. The security system includes proximity card access control, a C/W vehicle transponder system, CCTV, electronic visitor management system, and an intercom system. All subsystems are connected to a single Internet Protocol (IP) network, allowing the owner to take advantage of integrated functions through various subsystems.
