Prioritizing safety, while planning for future adaptability.

Smith + Andersen first became “more than a mechanical firm” in 1997, when David Mewdell joined the firm and launched our electrical service. This wasn't an arbitrary decision – it was a direct response to what our clients were asking for and aligned well with the ability to secure a strong leader to champion this growth. Since then, electrical engineering has become a hallmark of S+A. From high voltage power to low voltage lighting control, emergency generators to fire alarms, our national and local electrical teams have the design expertise to support the everyday demands of our building infrastructure.

We focus on designing safe, flexible, and adaptable systems that evolve with the changing needs of our clients. With a broad portfolio of project types, including multi-unit residential, mixed-use developments, retail, and tenant improvement projects, we possess the experience necessary to design electrical systems that are right for the project and the budget.

PUTTING SUSTAINABILITY FIRST

We are proud to work with photovoltaic (PV) systems that provide electricity through the conversion of light in a manner that is more sustainable than traditional systems.

From stand-alone to utility-interactive systems, our work for forward-thinking clients like the University of Toronto has given our teams the experience necessary to design for an increasingly sustainable future.

THE FUTURE IS UPON US

The demand and requirements for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure has increased massively over the past couple of years.

As a result, Smith + Andersen’s electrical designs have adapted, and we’ve learned how to mitigate the financial implications of these industry changes.

A SAFE SPACE

The YW Sheriff King Home in Calgary prioritizes safety throughout its design. Our electrical designers worked closely with an external IT consultant to coordinate communication services and connect both buildings with fibre so the facility can remain operational in the event of an emergency. We also worked with the landscape architect to design solutions in line with the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) approach, examining sight lines and creating well-lit spaces.

AWARD-WINNING LIGHTING PROJECTS

Lighting is a multi-purpose tool that sets the tone for an entire space, or can put a fresh new take on heritage architecture. Our lighting team can do it all – from award-winning design, to impressive lighting control solutions. We use lighting as a tool to create experiences.

HEAVY TIMBER, HEAVY COLLABORATION

Smith + Andersen’s electrical teams are constantly collaborating with project team members to deliver design solutions that prioritize their goals. 80 Atlantic, a heavy timber office building in downtown Toronto, required heavy collaboration with wood frame suppliers to create an underfloor raceway system that conceals conduits and maintains clean architectural elements.

CAMH GIF

FROM RENDERING TO REALITY

The early phases of project planning for the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH) Phase 1C in downtown Toronto were central in setting a project up for success. Our electrical team maintained a thorough, thoughtful approach throughout the project, bringing the client's vision (and their clients' needs) to life.

ESSENTIAL BUILDING SAFETY

Integrated Systems Testing (IST) is crucial for a safe building. It’s also a non-negotiable requirement to achieve and keep occupancy. Smith + Andersen leverages our in-depth knowledge of building systems to develop Integrated Systems Testing Plans based on the design, installation, and operation of life safety systems for each particular building.

OUR MISSION IS CRITICAL

The importance of our quality assurance is further highlighted when it comes to projects like data centres. Networks need to be reliable.
