The design for the Holly Community Centre integrates recreation and community spaces into the surrounding suburban park in Barrie's southern district. Large interior programmatic elements consisting of two hockey arenas, a recreational natatorium, gymnasium and fitness club, are organized around an L-shaped corridor along with smaller and more transparent spaces such as a preschool and public meeting rooms.
Tremendous building energy savings have been realized through the arena refrigeration plant where waste heat is diverted from the cooling tower based on building demand for use as domestic hot water preheat, rooftop unit heating coils, and arena spectator in-floor radiant heating.
Other building mechanical systems include desiccant dehumidification for the arena, along with energy efficient air-to-air heat recovery units for the arena and pool change rooms and a pool dehumidification unit that reclaims compressor heat and transfers it to the pool water or supply air.
