The amalgamation of Chatham's Public General Hospital and St. Joseph's
Hospital marked an opportunity to undertake an extensive renovation of the General Hospital's facilities. Additions to the operating room suite included the construction of six new operating rooms, a central sterilization depot, a centralized rehabilitation unit and a pharmacy. The St. Joseph's addition encompasses a diagnostic imaging suite, an emergency, intensive care unit, dialysis unit, surgical bed unit, progressive care unit and a palliative care unit. Renovations to the existing Public General Hospital include a new recovery unit, a day surgery facility and a maternal newborn unit.
The mechanical penthouse of the St. Joseph's addition accommodates the new central steam boiler plant and chiller plant that serves the new hospital. This facility also relies on new and existing central medical gas systems including oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, medical vacuum, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
