Originally constructed in 1975, the Century Place office tower required significant rehabilitation to update the 22 storeys of commercial space. Smith + Andersen was engaged as mechanical and electrical consultants for the project.
Mechanically, the project includes upgrades to the existing data centre, the washrooms, and the building management system. The existing mechanical systems are connected to new dedicated outdoor air system units, with a new magnetic bearing chiller and cooling tower. With occupant capacity increasing by 1.5 times per floor, additional ventilation air and cooling is required. A new pumping system, as well as distribution piping for hydronic heating and cooling systems, is also included, with the capability for the heating system to be tied into a proposed district energy system. New drainage and vent risers are also installed throughout the building.
Electrically, the project includes upgrades to the electrical distribution systems throughout the building to allow for densification of City of Edmonton staff, as well as upgrades to motor control centres, bus ducts, and transformers. New LED lighting with controls minimize energy usage, while security upgrades bring the building up to modern code requirements. Fire alarm upgrades are also included to suit new floorplans.
