The one that started it all…

Established in 1965, Toronto was Smith + Andersen’s first office. Nearly six decades and four office moves later, we've established ourselves as one of the leading engineering firms not only in the city, but across Canada. From geothermal solutions, to radiant heating and cooling, to district energy, this is a team that is driven by innovation and hard work. We take just as much pride in our work on a tenant fit-up or building assessment as we do contributing to the city's tallest towers.

As our largest office, the Toronto team demonstrates that decades of investing in our staff through strong mentorship and team building really pays off. From our professional engineers and low voltage systems design specialists, to our proposal coordinators and BIM technicians, we rely on each other to deliver high quality designs that lead to project success. Our dedicated resources and commitment to collaboration across such a wide variety of teams is at the core of our Toronto office, and is truly what sets us apart as industry leaders.

Bram Quote

“With the confidence of the industry behind us, and we continue to earn many new and repeat clients. We have a reputation of not only providing good designs but also providing worth—we're regularly recognized and rewarded beyond our fee.”

“The collaborative efforts of 160 Front’s exceptional project team have undoubtedly played a huge part in the ongoing success of this iconic office tower. Together, we are further defining downtown Toronto’s landscape and delivering a project as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside.”

Dan Larson, Principal

PRIORITIZATION & BALANCE

A joint venture with B+H Architects, Cadillac Fairview, and Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects, 160 Front was fully leased before construction even began. Our mechanical and sustainability teams took the requests of the anchor tenant into consideration in the design, strategically working with stakeholders to prioritize and balance the needs of various parties.

MULTI-UNIT RESIDENTIAL

In and around the Greater Toronto Area, our teams have worked on a number of projects that have quite literally shaped city skylines. From multi-phased multi-building projects to award-winning mixed-use buildings, our team knows what it takes to successfully design for the project at hand.

REVISIT, REPLACE, RECLAD

Recladding an existing building can improve its performance and overall value.

Take 30 & 40 Teesdale Place – two multi-unit residential towers in downtown Toronto. These buildings have been around for five decades and were NOT a glowing example of energy efficiency. Until now...

TOWERING TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

The HUB is a 1.5 million square foot office tower that focusses on efficiency, sustainability, and connectivity. The Class AAA office tower in downtown Toronto includes such design features as photovoltaic panels and deep-lake cooling technology. Our mechanical and electrical engineers have been hard at work to design systems that maximize innovation while minimizing environmental impact.

“I cannot reiterate enough how much I love the people I work with. Whether we’re working on a 280-page proposal or getting together socially, it’s the collaboration at our company that leads to its success and reputation.”

Scott Davis, Senior Proposal Specialist

ON THE GO...

Smith + Andersen is proud to be involved in a number of transportation projects in and around Toronto. We’re providing mechanical and electrical services for the ongoing Union Station Enhancement Project (USEP), which involves an expansion of Union Station to accommodate more frequent (and higher speed) train service, increased passenger demand levels, and the electrification of the Metrolinx rail network through the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

TEN OUT OF TEN(ANT)

From office fit-ups to flagship stores, interior spaces are a specialty of our Toronto teams. We design mechanical systems that don't get in the way (or are highly visible, if that's the look and feel of the space), audio-visual systems that make it easy to collaborate, and electrical systems that complement brand standards. When it's the details that make a difference, we recommend working with a team that understands every detail...
