Smith + Andersen was consulted on the design and construction of a new 10,000 square foot L-shaped addition linking the historic Vandorf Public School and Bogarttown Schoolhouse buildings. This heritage museum and community centre includes a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 150, gallery and exhibition rooms, offices, kitchen, climate-controlled storage rooms, and community work spaces.
Some of this project's unique construction challenges included working within the constraints of a historical building and commercial space of predominantly wood frame construction.
The building incorporates a highly efficient and energy-saving heat recovery heat pump system to provide heating and cooling for the facility, and water-saving plumbing fixtures. The HVAC system, which provides individual room controls to maintain the client's environmental requirements, was specifically designed to incorporate and accentuate architectural features and vision.
The electrical design includes a centralized utility service to provide power for the building itself and for three historical schoolhouses. Lighting design incorporates energy-efficient fluorescent lighting complete with UV filters in gallery areas for artwork displays.
