Backstage on the Esplanade is located across from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Toronto, at the corner of Yonge and the Esplanade. This 36-storey, 284-unit residential glass tower comprises of a 5-storey podium and 4 levels of above grade parking garage. Backstage's foundation will in fact be the parking garage (6 levels) for the space-constrained L tower, with a connecting pedestrian tunnel to run between them under The Esplanade. The building includes a theatre, bar, infinity pool, fitness facility, and a roof top garden. The project is targeting LEED Silver certification.
The green building concepts include heat recovery for each suite through ERV units, dual flash toilets, water conservation faucets, condensing boilers, heat pumps for occupant comfort control throughout the year, and variable speed pumping of all services.
The building consists of two separated electrical systems. One 600A service for the lower six levels of parking (dedicated for L-Tower) and a 3000A service dedicated to Backstage on the Esplanade which consists of four levels of parking, 31 floors of suites, and a roof top mechanical penthouse. The building is backed up with a roof top emergency 600KW generator. Building is designed with a modified 2 stage fire alarm system. Energy efficient lighting and controls are used throughout.
