This ""super jail"" project represents an efficient and cost-sensible strategy to operating prisons. Maplehurst's renovation and expansion was the first super jail project of many built in Southern Ontario.
The Correctional Centre has 1,550 beds and features a series of futuristic pods that distinguish it as a flagship facility for corrections in Canada. Most notably, Maplehurst boasts a 'Cook Chill' kitchen with the capacity to prepare 15,000 meals a day, enough to service much of Southern Ontario's correctional system.
Renovations to existing buildings (including medical facilities, religious environs, visiting areas, offices, and professional counselling areas) better reflect the needs of inmates. Another important development was the addition of the Women's Unit Housing to an existing building.
