The new headquarters for the Forensic Investigation Services of the Toronto Police is comprised of one storey with a mechanical penthouse. Some of the subgroups within the Forensic Investigation Services section include the Photo Section, Witness Viewing, Crime Scene Officers, and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
The building included state-of-the-art laboratories for cyano-acrylate, ninhydrane, fingerprinting, body examination and biohazard (suspect/victim), and vehicle examination. The biohazard labs and body room were designed to adhere to Biohazard 3 design guidelines but are operated at Level 2 guidelines.
Variable volume air handling systems are employed for the office and laboratories, with the laboratories 100% exhausted. The exhaust is variable volume via fume hood or laboratory while biohazard laboratory exhaust is HEPA filtered. Heating water is generated and utilized for perimeter radiant ceiling panels. To ensure there is no suspect/victim cross contamination, laboratories are individually ducted and plumbed.
