Kees and Claire Hut - The Spearhead Huts Project

The Kees and Claire Hut will provide a four-season overnight shelter for backcountry hikers and skiers near Russet Lake on the Spearhead Traverse. The first of three planned huts along the traverse, the Kees and Claire hut will accommodate up to 38 travellers and four custodians. The hut will include beds, storage areas for travel equipment, dining areas, and kitchens with propane cooktops. The highly-sustainable facility is funded through public fundraising, with volunteers providing the majority of the labour. Smith + Andersen is engaged as mechanical and electrical consultants for the first hut.

Mechanical

The project will include composting toilets, propane heaters, and a greywater dispersion system that will divert waste water to a dedicated septic field.

Electrical

Solar panels with a back-up propane generator will provide electricity to the facility.
