The Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship includes a 480-seat interactive lecture hall, Technology Enhanced Advanced Learning rooms, the Entrepreneurial Hatchery, design and fabrication studios, computer visualization rooms and an 'Arena' for student innovation clubs. The eight-storey building features an auditorium with teaching areas and design studios on the first floor, an open atrium between floors five through eight, and two levels of below-grade parking.
Smith + Andersen was engaged as the mechanical, electrical, communications, and sustainability (Footprint) consultant on this project. The Myhal Centre was designed to achieve a minimum of 25 per cent energy efficiency improvement over the current Ontario Building Code and targeted Toronto Green Standards Tier II.
The design included energy efficient options for sustainable low-cost operation with the building, which included alternative heating sources, building envelope options, waste heat use from equipment, lighting with LED, solar walls, and photovoltaics.
