Each year, teams in every Smith + Andersen office come together to find new and creative ways to participate in Earth Week. This year, we focussed on a mix of activities which promote active participation, education, and advocacy. Some of these activities were hosted across several offices, such as the "TED Talks" which were held across the Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary offices - showing short online films with a discussion afterward on what each of us can do to make a difference.
Earth Week may be from April 17th - 22nd, but many of our initiatives stretch far beyond the week. Take a look below at some of the activities championed by each of our offices.
In Alberta, our Calgary office took sustainability a step further, and decided to hold a clothing drive from April 17th until the end of April. These clothing donations will go to the Calgary Drop-In Centre and the Walk-In Closet - an organization that provides stylized outfits for women facing financial barriers who are returning to the workforce.
The office also organized their own city clean up, and took to the streets of downtown Calgary to remove litter. In just 20 minutes, their efforts made a big impact on downtown and around the Bow River. Thank-you to everyone who braved the chilly weather to make the city sparkle!
In addition to hosting lunch time "TED Talks", our Vancouver team is also focussing on textile recycling. The team is holding a clothing drive, with donations to be made to Diabetes Canada. This clothing drive is continuing until the end of the month, and has seen great success so far - above is a photo of the donation box after just a couple of days!
For the seventh year in a row, the Smith + Andersen team participated in Toronto's city-wide 20-Minute Makeover. The team once again tackled trash pick-up on the ravine land by the York Mills TTC parking lot. Just like the Calgary Cleanup, this small measure made a big different - and our team had a chance to get outside and enjoy the nice Spring weather.
On April 27th, Smith + Andersen will also be hosting our annual musical event - EcoJam. This beloved event encourages leaders in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry to form a band and perform for their peers, and all of the proceeds go to supporting tree planting initiatives across Ontario. Since its founding in 2013, we have raised over $20,000 which has directly contributed to nearly 8,000 new trees planted in Ontario.
Thank-you to everyone who has participated in these important events! We're looking forward to seeing what new, sustainable initiatives our teams come up with next year.
