The Moncton Downtown Centre sports facility will be a hub for indoor and outdoor entertainment in the heart of the city. The arena features an NHL-sized ice rink with nearly 9,000 spectator seats and several lounge areas. Outside, a civic plaza will host year-round events, such as ice skating and concerts. This highly-anticipated facility reached substantial completion at the end of June, and is on target to open to the public this fall.
The project team for this entertainment hub included Smith + Andersen as the mechanical consultant, and Footprint, a member of the Smith + Andersen Group of companies, as the energy modelling consultant. The mechanical design team worked closely with the energy modelling team to create sustainable heating and ventilation solutions for the arena. The arena refrigeration plant uses a heat recovery system to capture rejected heat for re-use in the facility’s heating systems. Radiant in-floor heating systems keep spectators warm in the ice rink, while desiccant dehumidification units control cooling and humidity to keep the ice surface at an ideal temperature. The main kitchen includes a variable speed exhaust system, which minimizes energy and make-up air requirements.
Congratulations to the design and construction team for reaching this important milestone! This entertainment centre will bring new vibrancy to Moncton’s downtown neighbourhood for many years to come.
