Electric Growth

Double the number of staff, a thriving portfolio of experience, and an expanding list of specialties – all of this adds up to one of the most impressive years that our Edmonton electrical team has seen since the office first opened in 2009.

Much of this positive change has been championed by Hussein Desouki – a respected electrical engineer and leader who joined Smith + Andersen at the end of last year. A natural fit for the Smith + Andersen team, Hussein has helped to shape and build upon our strategic goals for the local electrical team.

A year after introducing this exciting new electrical leader to our Edmonton office, all you have to do is look at the team’s recent achievements to get excited about the year ahead...

Projects to be proud of.
“A lot of big projects wrapped up for our team this year. One significant achievement was the completion of the ICE District Parkade. Our office is actively involved with several components of the full ICE District development, but the electrical design in particular (including security and communications) was a key component of this 1.1-million square foot parkade. Significant commercial retail developments also wrapped up, such as Premium Outlet Collection at Edmonton International Airport Mall and Phase 1 of the Kingsway Mall Re-Demise. We also have a nice mix of projects currently in the design and construction phase, including the rehabilitation of Century Place (working with our mechanical team) and the redevelopment of HSBC Place (working with our mechanical and Intelligent Integration Systems teams). The residential market is ramping up – everything from affordable housing (such as Belvedere, a five-storey townhouse-style building under construction at the corner of 129th Ave and 64th Street) to luxury condo mixed-use (such as the Mackenzie Tower and Jasper 1, 2, 3 developments). Community-driven projects are also a big part of the electrical team’s legacy work, and we’re already building on this experience through our work on projects such as Brule Community Hall (currently in design)."

In with the new, and in with the old.
“Smith + Andersen’s electrical expertise is often connected to big, new buildings. But we also deliver a significant amount of tenant improvements for retail and office clients. Premium Outlet Collection at Edmonton International Airport Mall was a great example of this, where our team was engaged for the base building as well as several of the tenant spaces. Our team also has dedicated resources committed to specialties such as building evaluations, power systems studies, and arc flash studies. We work with clients to improve the long-term operations of their existing buildings – supporting safety, security, and efficiency in landmark Edmonton structures.”
