Corporate Writer

The Toronto office of Smith and Andersen is seeking a corporate writer. You’re a champion of the written word. Short form or long form, digital or print, writing from scratch or editing someone else’s work – you can do it all, and you love being the go-to for great content. You’re passionate about improving internal communications, as well as working as part of a team to create effective and exciting marketing pieces. You’re able to stay on task for both long-term and short-term initiatives, and are ready to help others when they need your expertise. You are comfortable writing in multiple tones for multiple platforms, and are great at receiving feedback and implementing changes in a timely fashion.

Does this sound like you? If so, here are some of the more detailed responsibilities you can expect in this position:

  • Create strong professional relationships with key staff across the country.
  • Ensure all Marketing and Communications content (resumes, profiles, etc.) is aligned with the Writing Style Guide and obtains appropriate approvals.
  • Own the project profile process, including interviewing subject matter experts, writing copy within established word counts, and formatting within established templates.
  • Support the CV process, including writing copy within established word counts and formatting within established templates.
  • Work collaboratively with the art/graphics team to create content for social media channels.
  • Work within templates and support ongoing internal communications initiatives as required, including producing content for e-blasts, new hire emails, and newsletters.
  • Work within templates to complete external communications pieces as required, including producing content for advertisements and brochures.
  • Provide content for digital communications as required, including updating websites for companies within the Smith + Andersen Group of Companies (i.e., Smith + Andersen and Footprint).
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications team members to provide recommendations for communications alternatives, enhancements, and solutions. 
  • Contribute to departmental and organization-wide objectives and goals.
  • Help create content for SAiD, S+A’s intranet.
  • Provide support for internal presentations / corporate events as required.

Here are a few more qualifications which will help you with these responsibilities:

  • You have a University of College degree in journalism or English, or equivalent experience in a corresponding role.
  • You have 3-5 years of marketing communications, public relations, or journalism experience.
  • You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • You have experience writing in a wide variety of tones and voices.
  • You have strong technical writing skills.
  • You are comfortable writing for any medium.
  • You have proven experience interviewing internal and external stakeholders, and are great at getting to the heart of the most important information.
  • You have fantastic research skills.
  • You are a reliable editor and proof-reader.
  • Your experience in social media is an asset.
  • You work well independently or as part of a team.
  • You are skilled in standard MSOffice applications.
  • Your experience in Adobe InDesign is an asset.
  • Your experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industry is an asset.  
  • You are collaborative, professional, trustworthy, and diplomatic.
